Andreas Kötter Appointed as First German President of the World Lottery Association

Andreas Kötter, Managing Director of WestLotto, has been elected as President of the World Lottery Association (WLA). As the first German to lead the association, Kötter will guide the global organization of over 150 state and licensed gambling providers, focusing on issues such as responsible gaming, cybersecurity, and combating illegal gambling.

A New Chapter in Global Lottery Leadership

Elected unanimously at the WLA General Assembly in Paris, Andreas Kötter will take the helm of an association whose member companies collectively contribute over $90 billion annually in taxes worldwide.

Kötter expressed his commitment to enhancing the WLA’s role as a global platform for exchange and knowledge-sharing within the gambling industry. “As President of the WLA, I would like to do my part to strengthen the WLA as the global exchange and knowledge platform in gambling,” he remarked.

Strengthening Responsible Gaming and Cybersecurity Efforts

The WLA’s mission encompasses key areas like responsible gaming, cybersecurity, and risk management, ensuring that industry standards remain robust amid evolving challenges.

With Kötter’s leadership, the association will continue to support certified best practices and tackle industry-wide concerns, including initiatives to counter illegal gambling activities that undermine regulated markets.

A Legacy of Leadership in European Lotteries

Kötter brings a wealth of experience to his role, having served on the WLA board since 2018, most recently as First Vice President.

He has also chaired the Eurojackpot cooperation, a collaboration among 19 nations, which has been celebrated as the most successful lottery product launch of the past decade.

His extensive background positions him to lead the WLA effectively, succeeding former President Rebecca Paul from the USA, whom he praised for her dedication and service.

Lotteries’ Contribution to the Common Good

As the world’s most prevalent form of gambling, lotteries play a crucial role in supporting public welfare.

In Germany, for example, the companies within the German Lotto and Toto Block generated €3.28 billion in taxes for public projects last year, exemplifying the broader impact of state lotteries on the common good.

Under Kötter’s leadership, the WLA will continue to advocate for the role of lotteries in fostering responsible gambling and supporting communities.
