Apple Introduces Stricter App Store Age Ratings in Australia and France

Apple has announced upcoming changes to its App Store age rating system in Australia and France, aligning with local regulations to enhance user safety, particularly for children. The new regional age ratings will be displayed alongside Apple’s global ratings and will not require any action from app developers.

Changes to Simulated Gambling App Ratings in Australia

In Australia, the new guidelines will see apps that feature any form of simulated gambling receive an R18+ regional age rating, in addition to Apple’s existing global age categorisation.

Currently, under Apple’s global ratings, apps with “Infrequent or mild simulated gambling” are classified as 12+, while those with “Frequent or intense simulated gambling” receive a 17+ rating.

The new R18+ rating in Australia reflects stricter national regulations aimed at minimizing exposure to gambling content among younger users.

The shift follows the Australian Government’s updated classification guidelines for video games containing gambling-like elements, which took effect on 22 September 2024.

This update is part of a broader effort to address concerns about the potential connection between gambling mechanics in games and problem gambling behavior, particularly among minors.

New Age Ratings in France

In France, apps that carry a 17+ Apple global age rating will now display an additional 18+ regional age rating on the App Store.

This adjustment aligns with local age classification requirements, ensuring that users are provided with accurate information about the content and its suitability for various age groups.

Stricter Regulations on In-Game Purchases and Loot Boxes

In Australia, the new regulations also affect video games offering paid loot boxes or chance-based in-game purchases.

Such games will now be classified with a minimum rating of M (Mature), indicating they are not recommended for players under 15.

Apps featuring simulated gambling will be classified as R18+, restricting purchases to adults only.
