Australia Introduces New Classification Rules for Games with Gambling-Like Features

In response to growing concerns about the potential connection between video game mechanics and gambling addiction, Australia has introduced updated classification guidelines for video games featuring gambling-like material.

Loot Boxes and Simulated Gambling Under New Scrutiny

The new rules will impact games with in-game purchases, such as loot boxes, which have stirred global debates due to their resemblance to gambling mechanics.

Rather than imposing an outright ban, Australia will assign an M (Mature) rating to games containing loot boxes.

This rating suggests that these games may not be suitable for players under the age of 15, though it doesn’t enforce legal sales restrictions.

Meanwhile, video games that simulate real gambling activities, such as slot machines or casino games, will be given an R 18+ classification, legally restricting them to adult players only.

Retailers and Platforms to Adapt

The changes in classification will affect retailers, as well as PC and console platforms that offer games with purchasable loot boxes or real-money-related gambling elements.

Titles that feature interactive gambling or simulate gambling mechanics will face stricter controls, limiting access to younger audiences.

However, the updated guidelines won’t apply to games that merely feature casino-like settings without actual gambling mechanics.

Similarly, chance-based mechanics that do not involve real-money transactions will remain exempt from these classifications.

The rules will primarily target upcoming game releases and titles undergoing significant updates, ensuring that future content adheres to the new standards.
