Australian Regulator Targets Influencers Promoting Illegal Gambling

Australia’s media and communications authority has warned influencers who advertise illegal online gambling platforms. The ACMA says these promotions put followers at risk and can lead to significant fines.

Warning Against Illegal Promotion

The ACMA is closely monitoring influencers on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. It has found instances where influencers stream illegal online slots, show betting methods, or link followers to unlicensed gambling websites.

Australian law bans online slots, casino-style games, and unlicensed lotteries. It also forbids accepting in-play sports bets. Influencers who help advertise these services break the law. This includes sharing links, livestreaming betting, or running giveaways related to illegal platforms.

Penalties for Influencers

Individuals who advertise illegal gambling services can be fined up to $59,400. Those providing links or making access to such platforms easier face even higher penalties, reaching $2,475,000. The ACMA has stated clearly that it will enforce these rules.

Illegal gambling services lack the consumer protections required in Australia. Players can lose money and have no way to recover it. Young followers of influencers often have a higher risk of being exposed to these dangers. The ACMA will continue to watch online platforms closely.
