Danish Regulator Raises Concerns Over Gambling on Roblox

The Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden) has raised concerns over rising gambling activities on Roblox. The regulator highlighted the growing use of Robux, the platform’s virtual currency, for skin betting. It warned that third-party websites allow users to gamble with earned Robux, which can be converted into real money.

Increase in Robux Gambling

Spillemyndigheden reported a rise in gambling involving Robux. Some third-party sites let users deposit and withdraw funds in Robux, enabling casino games, betting, and lotteries.

The regulator sees this as a violation of gambling laws and a risk to young players.

Roblox’s Policy on Gambling Content

Roblox allows gambling-related content with age restrictions but bans real gambling for money or Robux.

Despite this, Spillemyndigheden argues that Robux gambling falls under its jurisdiction.

A 2022 court ruling classified certain Roblox-related gambling websites as targeting Danish users, strengthening the regulator’s authority.

Risks for Minors

Spillemyndigheden estimates that 50% of Roblox users are under 18, with 25% under 13. It warned that illegal Robux gambling sites let minors access betting through their Roblox logins.

“Roblox is particularly popular among children and young people under 18. Therefore, Robux betting can be a problem because it means that many young people under 18 can access gambling via Robux betting,” Spillemyndigheden stated.

“On almost all illegal Robux betting websites, a Roblox login can be used for access. This is problematic as the Roblox login is associated with the legal platform and communicates easier access for young people, in particular, to participate in gambling.”

Parents File Lawsuit Against Roblox

In 2023, parents filed a class-action lawsuit against Roblox. Plaintiffs Rachel Colvin and Danielle Sass claimed their children lost money through third-party gambling sites.

They argued that Roblox profits from these links. One Robux unit is worth $0.0125, making it a real-money equivalent.

Regulator’s Efforts to Tackle Illegal Gambling

Spillemyndigheden continues working with Google, Facebook, and Twitch to remove unauthorized gambling content. It asked the public to report illegal gambling ads with screenshots and links.

“The Danish Gambling Authority is working to establish more collaborations with other media, where we see illegal gambling or the illegal provision of gambling taking place,” the regulator stated.
