Danske Spil Reports Strong Half-Year Financial Performance
Danske Spil, a leading gaming operator, announced its impressive half-year financial results for 2023, showcasing significant progress compared to the same period in 2022.
This success is attributed to positive developments within Danske Lotteri Spil, improved financial aspects, and the merger with Klasselotteriet. The company also continues to emphasize responsible gaming and introduces new initiatives to promote healthy gambling habits and combat addiction.
Financial Growth and Milestones
During the first half of 2023, Danske Spil achieved a gross gaming revenue (BSI) of 2,471 million DKK, marking a remarkable increase of 123 million DKK compared to the same period in 2022. The post-tax profit for this period amounted to 915 million DKK, reflecting a substantial increase of 119 million DKK year-over-year.
Peter Christensen, Chairman of Danske Spil, expressed satisfaction with the company’s performance, stating, “We’ve had a satisfactory first half of 2023, where we have improved both our top and bottom lines. We remain committed to promoting responsible gaming while strengthening our business. Over the past years, we have significantly reduced the number of players displaying signs of problematic gambling behavior, and we continue to focus on this important aspect.”
Increased Customer Engagement
Danske Spil’s overall revenue growth can be attributed to factors such as the popularity of Eurojackpot’s Tuesday draws and large lottery jackpots. Danske Licens Spil, the segment offering betting and casino services, also saw an increase in turnover.
Notably, more Danish players are choosing Danske Spil, and they tend to play with smaller amounts. However, Danske Spil faces rising costs due to inflation. The company remains dedicated to its efforts to combat gambling addiction, with initiatives like the gaming card and recently reduced deposit limits contributing to positive developments in responsible gaming.
A Balance of Profit and Responsibility
Nikolas Lyhne-Knudsen, CEO of Danske Spil, highlighted the company’s commitment to both profitability and responsibility. He stated, “We operate a profitable and ethical business, striving to maintain a strong position in the market while leading in terms of responsibility. More customers are choosing us, and they are playing responsibly, which reflects the right direction in our efforts to promote healthier gambling habits. Our goal is to generate revenue for the community while ensuring the safety and enjoyment of our products for all Danes.”
Continued Focus on Responsible Gaming
Danske Spil pioneered the use of gaming cards in the industry in 2020, aiming to protect minors, limit problematic gambling behavior, and combat match-fixing and money laundering. This initiative led some customers who wished to gamble anonymously to seek alternatives. Starting on October 1, 2023, the entire industry will be required to implement gaming cards.
The positive results of the first half of 2023 have not altered Danske Spil’s expectations for the full year. The company still anticipates a gross gaming revenue (BSI) ranging from 5.0 to 5.2 billion DKK and an after-tax profit for 2023 between 1.7 to 1.8 billion DKK.
