Denmark’s Gambling Revenue Drops in September
Denmark’s September GGR was DKK533 million, down 6.3% year-on-year according to Spillemyndigheden. Online casino remains the biggest revenue earner, but other sectors declined.
Online Casino Remains the Top Earner
Online casino is Denmark’s largest revenue source, DKK288 million in September, up 12.1% from last year but down from August’s DKK299 million. Slot machines accounted for 77.1% of online casino revenue, blackjack and roulette 6.7%, poker 3.6%, bingo 3.1%, and other games 2.7%.
Biggest Decline in Sports Betting
Sports betting saw the biggest decline, down 21.7% to DKK144 million from last year. Of this, 69.2% was mobile, 15.6% desktop and 15.2% retail. Mobile betting is becoming more popular among Danish players.
Physical Slots and Land-Based Casinos Down
Physical slots generated DKK92 million, down 4.2% year on year. Gaming halls accounted for 79.2% of this, restaurant-based machines 20.8%. Land-based casinos were down DKK29 million, 9.4% from September 2023.
Responsible Gambling and ROFUS Registrations
The regulator also reported an increase in ROFUS registrations, the national self-exclusion scheme, to 53,043 by the end of September. 77.6% were male and 22.4% female, 66.0% permanent exclusion, 16.2% 6 months, 11.3% 3 months and 6.4% 1 month.
Denmark’s national gambling helpline, StopSpillet, received 37 calls in September, more than a third of them from 18-25 year olds. This age group is still the most likely to seek help with gambling.
With online casino gaming remaining strong, Denmark’s gambling landscape reflects both a shift towards digital engagement and an ongoing focus on responsible gambling initiatives.
