EPT Paris 2025 Canceled Amid French Regulatory Uncertainty
The European Poker Tour (EPT) Paris 2025, originally slated for February, has been canceled due to “unforeseen changes in French government policies and ongoing regulatory developments,” PokerStars and Club Barrière have announced.
Reasons Behind the Cancellation
The organizers cited factors beyond their control, including evolving licensing requirements and uncertainties in government policy, as key reasons for the cancellation. They confirmed their commitment to monitoring the legal and regulatory developments while exploring possibilities to reschedule the Paris event.
In an official statement, PokerStars expressed its regret, saying:
“We understand the disappointment this news will bring to our players and the wider poker community. To those who have already secured online packages for EPT or FPS Paris, our team will reach out directly with further information.”
Turbulence in the Gambling Industry in France
This cancellation occurs amid broader turbulence in France’s gambling industry, with heightened uncertainty due to potential tax increases and debates over iGaming regulation.
Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s government is facing significant political instability, including a vote of no confidence following the rejection of the 2025 Budget proposal by French MPs earlier this week.
If Barnier’s government fails to survive the vote, it could become the shortest-lived administration in French history. The outcome will have significant implications for the country’s economic policy, including the proposed tax hikes for online sportsbooks and ongoing studies into online casino regulation.
The online gambling industry in France is particularly concerned about the increased tax on online sportsbooks, set to take effect in April 2025. Additionally, the government’s working groups have begun addressing online casino regulations, with addiction being the focus of the first discussion held yesterday.
