Football Legends Promote Responsible Betting

Athletes Share Personal Experiences

VGCCC invited two well-known players to highlight how simple tools can help manage gambling behaviour more effectively. Sam Docherty openly reflected on his own journey and now supports harm-prevention messaging.

Docherty said:

“I’ve had my struggles with gambling in the past and now I set a weekly deposit limit. I’ve found it really helps keep my gambling activity in check. People struggling with gambling harm can feel stuck and alone because of feelings like shame and guilt – and I want them to know that it’s okay to seek help.”

His participation helps normalise the idea that setting limits can be part of everyday decision-making. Moreover, the campaign links sporting discipline with personal financial control. Cameron Munster also encourages a proactive mindset.

Munster explained:

“In the last few years, I have grown immensely as a person and by setting limits, I’ve had the occasional gamble but have been able to focus on what matters most.”

Both players contribute personal perspectives that may resonate with young fans who frequently engage with sports betting.

Safer Play Through Practical Guidelines

The regulator is targeting men aged 18–34, a group considered more vulnerable to gambling-related harm. VGCCC CEO Suzy Neilan emphasises that the timing supports current market conditions.

Neilan noted:

“There is always a spike in wagering and sports gambling at this time of year, which is why it’s crucial we reach people that are statistically at greater risk of experiencing gambling harm.”

The campaign therefore aims to reach individuals when sports betting interest is high. In addition, authorities encourage players to commit to limits before betting begins. Practical advice focuses on restricting how often and how much they gamble. Regulators hope this approach will reduce risky behaviour and improve long-term outcomes for consumers. By combining awareness with credible ambassadors, the initiative seeks to strengthen responsible gambling standards across the sports betting environment.
