Gambling Revenue in Denmark Rises 1.4% in March Amid Online Casino Growth

Gambling spend in Denmark rose by 1.4% in March 2025 compared to the same month last year, according to new figures from the Danish Gambling Authority. The increase was driven by continued growth in online casino activity, which offset small declines in betting and land-based verticals.

Online Casino Revenue Up 6.4%

The latest monthly report from Spillemyndigheden highlights a 6.4% year-on-year rise in online casino revenue for March. This growth continues the digital momentum seen throughout previous quarters, as Danish consumers increasingly shift towards regulated online gambling.

In contrast, revenue from betting, gaming machines, and land-based casinos declined slightly over the same period. While these drops were marginal, they underscore an ongoing structural change in the market, with digital platforms steadily gaining ground.

Bingo Added to Monthly Statistics

March also marked the first time land-based bingo appeared as a standalone category in the regulator’s monthly reporting. This change follows regulatory adjustments introduced on 1 January 2025, allowing commercial bingo operations under Denmark’s liberalised licensing system.

Previously, all bingo activity was reported under the lottery category, which continues to include charitable bingo events not operated on a commercial basis.

Context from the 2024 Annual Report

The latest monthly update comes shortly after Spillemyndigheden released its annual report, The Gambling Market in Numbers 2024. According to the report, total gambling spend in Denmark reached DKK 11.0bn ($1.6bn) last year — a 5.6% increase from 2023.

Online gambling accounted for a growing share of that total, with the channelisation rate — representing the share of gambling taking place via licensed operators — rising to 91.5%, up from 90.8% in 2023. This places Denmark among the top five countries globally in terms of online gambling regulation and market share.

The report also detailed activity around high-profile sporting events, notably an uptick in betting volume during the UEFA Men’s Euro 2024 whenever the Danish national team played. Other sections covered the country’s responsible gambling measures, including the ROFUS self-exclusion system and the StopSpillet counselling helpline.

Licensing Changes and Market Trends

In parallel with performance data, the Danish Gambling Authority is implementing new licensing rules for game suppliers, with full compliance required by July 2025. These rules are intended to enhance regulatory oversight and ensure consistency across the digital supply chain.

In 2024, gross gaming revenue reached DKK 7.27bn, with online casino making up nearly half of the total. Among major verticals, only gaming machines showed an annual decline.
