Online Platforms Propel Revenue Surge
According to the Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP), online betting was the main contributor to this growth. Online gambling activities accounted for approximately 70% of the total TGR, amounting to €20.1 billion ($21.83 billion).
The gaming operator OPAP played a substantial role in the industry’s performance, generating €6.6 billion in total gaming revenue.
Traditional casinos in Greece also reported positive results, with a 7% year-on-year increase in TGR. Between January and August, land-based casinos brought in €1.3 billion ($1.41 billion), indicating sustained interest in physical gambling venues.
Increased Tax Revenues for the State
The flourishing gambling industry has positively impacted government finances. Tax income from betting companies rose by around 13.5% during the same period.
These encouraging figures build on the strong start observed earlier in the year. In June, the EEEP reported that total turnover from legal gambling activities—including OPAP, lotteries, racecourse betting, online gambling, and casinos—was €10.85 billion ($11.79 billion) in the first quarter of 2024. This represents an increase from €9.51 billion ($10.33 billion) during the same period last year.
