Heroic Hearts Launches Psilocybin Study to Help Veterans with Gambling Addiction

The Heroic Hearts Project is testing an innovative treatment for gambling addiction in military veterans using psilocybin, the active compound in magic mushrooms. This groundbreaking study, conducted in collaboration with the University of Gibraltar, seeks to determine whether psilocybin can help reduce the compulsive gambling behaviors veterans often experience.

A Netherlands Retreat as the Study’s Core

Set in the Netherlands, the study centers on a nine-week program that includes a retreat designed to immerse participants in a therapeutic environment.

Forces News reports that the retreat will host two psilocybin ceremonies, conducted in a natural setting under the supervision of trained therapists.

Each session allows participants to consume up to five grams of psilocybin truffles in a safe, supportive space.

Doctors classify gambling addiction as a mental health disorder, characterized by an inability to resist the urge to gamble despite harmful consequences.

Veterans, often dealing with the lingering effects of military service, are disproportionately affected by this issue. Existing treatments frequently fail to yield significant results, prompting experts to explore alternative methods like psychedelics.

Heroic Hearts UK Aims to Build Scientific Evidence

The Heroic Hearts Project ensures that the study’s outcomes are grounded in scientific evidence. CEO Keith Abraham highlights the importance of a structured process, stating that preparation is key to achieving meaningful results.

Participants begin with two weeks of preparation before the retreat to prepare their minds and emotions for the journey ahead. The support does not end with the retreat; the program extends to post-retreat evaluation and guidance to help participants integrate their experiences into daily life.

Comprehensive Support for Participants

To ensure the safety and reliability of the study, the Heroic Hearts Project rigorously screens all participants. This meticulous approach not only protects individuals but also enhances the scientific credibility of the research.

Fully funded by the organization, the program covers all costs except for travel to and from the UK, ensuring accessibility for veterans in need of this groundbreaking treatment.
