Indonesia to Tighten Online Gambling Regulations

Indonesia is preparing to implement stricter regulations on online gambling, following a directive from President Prabowo Subianto. The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has confirmed that new rules will be introduced soon.

Government Set to Introduce Stricter Rules

Despite blocking nearly one million gambling websites, Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid stressed that this approach alone is insufficient. She emphasized that a broader regulatory framework is necessary to combat the issue effectively.

Authorities have highlighted the need for coordinated efforts between multiple institutions, including the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, law enforcement agencies, and the Attorney General’s Office. Collaboration is being positioned as a critical element in the government’s broader strategy to curb online gambling in Indonesia.

“The President emphasised that handling online gambling must be stricter. One of the strategic steps that will be taken soon is the issuance of regulations in the form of Government Regulations (PP) that regulate more firmly and comprehensively”, stated Meutya Hafid.

Ongoing Crackdown on Online Gambling Content

Regulatory efforts have already intensified in early 2025. Within the first six days of the year, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs blocked 43,063 digital items related to online gambling content.

Elsewhere in Asia, Thailand has outlined proposed entry requirements for locals wishing to access casinos. The draft regulations suggest that individuals must have at least ฿50 million ($1.48 million) in fixed deposits for at least six months before entry, along with an entry fee capped at ฿5,000.
