Japan Struggles to Curb Offshore Gambling Growth
A survey by the Society Concerned about Gambling Addiction found that offshore gambling is widespread in Japan, with 3.7 million people betting on unlicensed platforms. Many gamblers remain unaware of the legal restrictions, and addiction often leads to rapid debt accumulation.
Widespread Use of Offshore Gambling
Despite Japan’s strict gambling laws, millions place bets on offshore sites. A survey by the Society Concerned about Gambling Addiction revealed that many players do not realize these platforms operate illegally.
Noriko Tanaka, a representative of the organization, warned about the risks. “Japanese citizens need to be shielded from the influence of foreign gambling operators who have been targeting the country through the use of offshore websites,” she stated.
Social Media Ads Drive Gambling Participation
Aggressive marketing fuels offshore gambling’s growth. The survey found that 23.7% of users encountered gambling ads on social media before placing bets.
Many who start gambling on these sites borrow money quickly, with one in three taking out a loan within a week.
Lack of Awareness About Gambling Laws
Most players do not realize online gambling is illegal in Japan. The survey showed that 52.7% of respondents were unaware of offshore gambling restrictions.
The National Police Agency confirmed this trend, reporting that 40% of surveyed individuals also lacked this knowledge.
Cultural Stigma Hinders Support
Many gamblers hesitate to seek help due to Japan’s strong stigma around debt. Although 60% of respondents recognized gambling addiction as a risk, few took steps to get support.
Experts argue that the government has not done enough to educate the public or offer proper assistance to problem gamblers.
