Lars Krarup to Take Over as Chair of Danske Spil in June

Former Herning mayor Lars Krarup will become the new chairman of Danske Spil on 3 June, following a nomination backed by Denmark’s Ministry of Finance. The appointment brings a long-time public servant and sports advocate to the helm of the state-owned lottery and betting operator.

From Municipal Leadership to National Gaming Oversight

Lars Krarup’s appointment marks a shift from nearly two decades in local government to one of Denmark’s most visible gaming institutions. As mayor of Herning Municipality for over 19 years, Krarup developed a reputation for community-focused leadership—an approach he is expected to bring to Danske Spil, which remains 81% state-owned.

His public service background extends beyond politics. Krarup currently chairs Realdania, a private association that funds architecture and planning projects throughout Denmark. He has also led two of the country’s most influential sports organisations: Team Danmark, which supports elite athletes, and Sport Event Denmark, which promotes major sporting events.

Krarup Emphasises Danske Spil’s Role in Supporting Communities

In a statement confirming his appointment, Krarup reflected on his experience with Danske Spil’s role in funding public benefit initiatives.

“In my work as mayor and in sports, I have experienced firsthand how Danske Spil’s profits support both small, large and professional communities,” he said. “It is a privilege to contribute to continuing to secure the financial foundation for Danish association life and thousands of good causes.”

He added that Danske Spil occupies a unique role in Danish society.

“Danske Spil is a particularly important social actor. Not only because the company brings together 1.9 million Danes each year around the dream of winning for the benefit of the community, but also because profitability and responsibility go hand in hand when Danske Spil leads the way for a more responsible gaming market.”

Alongside Krarup’s appointment, Danske Spil confirmed that Charlotte Bach will continue in her role as deputy chair. Bach, who also serves as chair of the Danish Gymnastics and Sports Associations (DGI), was first elected to the position in 2022.
