Latvia Considers Raising Legal Gambling Age to 21

Latvia is considering a major overhaul of its gambling regulations, including raising the legal gambling age to 21 and imposing stricter controls on both land-based and online gambling. These proposed changes aim to enhance consumer protection and reduce the risks of gambling-related harm across the country.

Proposed Legal Age Limits for Gambling in Latvia

Latvia is on the brink of significant regulatory changes in its gambling sector, with the government considering a draft law that would raise the minimum age for gambling activities from 18 to 21. This proposed increase aligns with legal age requirements seen in other European countries and in many U.S. states.

Currently, Latvia allows individuals of any age to participate in lottery activities. However, the new proposal seeks to impose an age restriction, barring anyone under 18 from engaging in lottery games. This move is part of a broader effort to prevent gambling-related issues among younger populations and to curb early exposure to gambling.

Stricter Operating Hours and Online Gambling Limits

The draft law also includes a provision to reduce the operating hours of physical gambling venues. If enacted, these venues would be required to close from 9 PM to 6 AM, with exceptions only for ongoing wagers or bets. This change aims to limit late-night gambling, which is often associated with higher risks of problem gambling and other negative behaviors.

In addition to changes affecting land-based gambling, the proposed law introduces new restrictions for online gambling operators. Licensed iGaming operators would be required to monitor player activity more closely, ensuring that no individual engages in gambling for more than 21 hours within a 24-hour period. This measure is designed to limit prolonged exposure to online gambling, which can lead to excessive gambling and financial problems.

The proposed law, which is currently awaiting approval from Latvia’s Parliament, represents a comprehensive effort to reform the country’s gambling regulations. If passed, these changes will have a significant impact on both the land-based and online gambling sectors, with a clear focus on enhancing consumer protection and reducing the risks of gambling-related harm.
