Lord Allen of Kensington Appointed Chairman of British Horseracing Association
The British Horseracing Association (BHA) has named Lord Allen of Kensington CBE as its next chairman. He will succeed Joe Saumarez Smith in June 2025, bringing extensive experience from the commercial, media, and sports sectors.
A Seasoned Leader Takes the Reins
Lord Allen of Kensington will officially begin his tenure as chairman of the BHA on June 1, 2025.
His appointment follows the planned departure of current chairman Joe Saumarez Smith in May 2025. Announced earlier this year, Smith’s decision to step down paves the way for a leadership transition aimed at bolstering British horseracing’s commercial and reputational standing.
Broad Experience Across Sectors
Lord Allen brings a wealth of expertise from diverse sectors, including government, sports, and media. He currently chairs the Invictus Games Foundation and has previously held key roles in major sporting events.
Notably, he served as chairman of the Manchester Commonwealth Games from 2000 to 2003 and played a pivotal role in London’s bid for the 2012 Olympics.
Beyond sports, Lord Allen has an accomplished career in broadcasting, having held senior positions at EMI, Virgin Media, and Endemol.
He is presently the chairman of Global Media and Entertainment, Balfour Beatty, and THG, further solidifying his reputation as a versatile leader.
A Vision for British Horseracing
In a statement on his appointment, Lord Allen emphasized his commitment to enhancing the sport’s commercial and reputational prospects.
“I look forward to building a strong relationship with the new CEO and the board and all our stakeholders, delivering the vision of building the commercial and reputational aspects of the sector,” Lord Allen said.
“My knowledge, skills and experience from various sectors, including media and entertainment, and having led many regulated and sporting organisations, will hopefully stand me in good stead to bring a fresh perspective to this incredible sport.”
BHA Welcomes Fresh Leadership
David Jones, chair of the BHA nominations committee, praised Lord Allen’s credentials and leadership qualities.
“His record speaks for itself. His impressive leadership skills, financial and commercial acumen, broadcast experience and an understanding of government will bring a fresh and independent perspective to the BHA’s work,” Jones stated.
“Combined with his wealth of experience in global sporting events, Lord Allen impressed the committee with his perceptive grasp of the challenges facing racing and will be a powerful advocate for the sport.”
Search for a New CEO Continues
The appointment of Lord Allen comes as the BHA seeks a successor for outgoing CEO Julie Harrington.
Harrington, who has served as CEO since 2020, will step down at the end of 2024. During her tenure, she oversaw key developments, including the establishment of the Horseracing Industry People Board.
