Macau Authorities Block Over 36,000 Illegal Gambling Websites in 2024
Macau’s security authorities have blocked more than 36,000 illegal gambling websites in the first half of 2024, according to a report released by the Office of the Secretary for Security.
Extensive Website Blockades
The Office of the Secretary for Security reported that over 36,000 unauthorized gambling websites were shut down in the initial six months of 2024. These illicit sites often masquerade as legitimate Macau gaming operators, posing significant threats to public property safety and tarnishing the image of Macau’s esteemed gaming sector.
Macau’s Judiciary Police have intensified their collaboration with the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau to combat illegal online gambling. This enhanced cooperation aims to dismantle fraudulent operations that exploit the reputable brands of established Macau casino operators.
Since 2022, a three-way joint action mechanism involving the Judiciary Police, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, and major gaming operators has been in place. This partnership is designed to effectively target and eliminate illegal gambling websites that infringe upon the brands of legitimate gaming firms.
Significant “Break Peak” Operation
A notable success in this crackdown was the “Break Peak” operation conducted in late June 2024. This joint effort with police forces from Hong Kong and Guangdong province led to the dismantling of a cross-border syndicate involved in illegal online sports betting. The operation resulted in the seizure of criminal proceeds exceeding MOP1 billion (approximately US$124.6 million).
In response to the ongoing challenges posed by illegal online gambling, the Macau government has proposed amendments to the city’s gambling laws. Currently under review by the Legislative Assembly, the proposed bill mandates prison sentences ranging from one to eight years for individuals found guilty of operating, promoting, or organizing unauthorized online gambling activities in Macau, irrespective of the frequency of such offenses.
These stringent measures reflect Macau’s dedication to maintaining a secure and reputable gaming environment. By targeting illegal operations and reinforcing legal frameworks, Macau aims to protect both its economic interests and the well-being of its residents from the adverse effects of unauthorized gambling activities.
