Online Gambling Drove Market Growth in Denmark in 2024
Denmark’s gambling market reached a total gross gaming revenue (GGR) of DKK 11 billion in 2024, equivalent to approximately €1.47 billion. The year’s growth was primarily driven by the online segment, which accounted for 65% of total market turnover.

Gambling Market Sees Growth
After several years of stagnation and minor declines, the Danish gambling market rebounded in 2024. Gross gaming revenue (GGR) rose from DKK 10.4 billion in 2023 to DKK 11.0 billion, an increase of 5.4%. Lotteries remained the largest segment, contributing DKK 3.7 billion (34% of total GGR), followed by online casino (DKK 3.5 billion, 32%) and betting (DKK 2.2 billion, 20%).
Gaming machines and land-based casinos accounted for smaller portions of the market – 11% and 3%, respectively. The figures confirm a continuing trend toward digital gambling, especially in the post-Covid period.
Online Gambling Leads the Way
In 2024, 68% of all gambling revenue came from online channels, up from 31% in 2012. Mobile gambling alone accounted for 70% of online betting and casino GGR. This shift reflects broader digital adoption in Denmark, which is among the most digitised countries in Europe.
Online casinos saw the most significant year-on-year growth, with GGR increasing by 13.1%. Gaming machines were the only category to decline, dropping 2.5% compared to 2023.
Betting Activity Peaks During Major Football Events
Football continues to be a key driver of betting activity in Denmark. During the 2024 European Championship, betting volumes spiked on the days Denmark played. June 16, the date of Denmark’s first match against Slovenia, recorded the highest daily betting stakes of the tournament.
Weekends also remain peak betting periods, with 38% of bets placed on Saturdays and Sundays.
Denmark Among Europe’s Top Digital Gambling Markets
Danes spent an average of DKK 2,280 on gambling in 2024, placing the country 12th in Europe in per capita gambling spend. Within the Nordic region, Denmark ranked just behind Iceland, Finland, and Sweden.
Notably, 91.5% of online gambling in Denmark was channeled through licensed operators, the fifth highest channelisation rate in Europe. This suggests effective regulation and high consumer trust in the licensed market.
Responsible Gambling Tools See Greater Use
The number of Danes registered with ROFUS, the self-exclusion system, grew by nearly 10,000 in 2024 to 55,899. Most registrants (66%) opted for permanent exclusion. Younger males remain the most represented group, with 39% of all registrants being men under 30.
In addition, the national helpline StopSpillet received 544 inquiries in 2024, with 58% coming directly from players. The majority of cases involved online gambling, particularly gaming machines, roulette, and blackjack.
There were 967 active gambling licences in Denmark in 2024. These included 40 online casino licences and 26 for betting, along with over 1,500 charity lottery notifications. Gaming machines remained heavily regulated, with 289 venue licences in effect.
