Ontario Sees Record Quarterly Handle in Digital Gambling with CA$18.7 Billion Wagered

Ontario’s digital gambling market continues to grow, with a record CA$18.7 billion in wagers across all platforms during the latest quarter. This represents a 1.6% increase from Q1 and a 31.7% rise compared to the same period last year, highlighting Ontario’s expanding iGaming sector.

Quarterly Growth in Wagering Activity

Since the launch of digital sports betting and online gambling in April 2022, Ontario has witnessed a steady increase in gambling activity.

In the second quarter, gamblers in Ontario placed CA$18.7 billion in bets, exceeding the CA$18.4 billion wagered in Q1.

iGaming Ontario reports that these figures represent total bets and exclude promotional deductions, hold, and individual operator data, emphasizing the market’s robust demand and engagement.

Online Casino Growth and Revenue Increase

Online casino games remained the dominant segment, with CA$16 billion in bets and CA$738 million in revenue—a 35.4% increase compared to Q2 2023.

This growth includes a range of gaming formats, such as slots, digital table games, and peer-to-peer bingo.

In comparison to Q1 2024, betting increased by 1.7%, with revenue reaching CA$553 million, up significantly from CA$407 million in Q2 2023.

Sports Betting Sees Decline

In contrast, sports betting saw a decrease in both handle and revenue. With CA$2.2 billion wagered and CA$167 million in operator revenue, the segment fell short of Q1 figures, pointing to a possible seasonal decline or shifts in player interest within Ontario’s broader gambling market.

Player Engagement and Casino Dominance

The report indicated high player activity, with an average spend of CA$308 per player and 1.32 million active accounts during the quarter.

Casino gaming constituted the majority of the market, making up 86% of total betting and 75% of revenue.

Peer-to-peer betting also made its mark, with CA$417 million wagered and CA$18 million in revenue, underscoring the diversity within Ontario’s iGaming offerings.
