Ontario’s Online Gambling Market Achieves Record-High Spending in Q3

Ontario’s online gambling sector reached an unprecedented milestone in Q3, with total spending hitting CA$22.7 billion. This marks the highest quarterly expenditure recorded to date, reflecting a 32% year-on-year increase and a 22% rise compared to the previous quarter.

Online Casino Remains the Leading Segment

iGaming Ontario, the province’s regulatory authority, has transitioned from quarterly to monthly reporting, offering more frequent insights into market performance. The revised schedule covers all months since the launch of legal online gambling in April 2022.

Online casinos accounted for the bulk of the Q3 spend, with CA$18.9 billion wagered—an increase of 38% year-on-year, setting another record for the province.

Sports betting, including esports, saw wagers of CA$3.4 billion, up 10% from the previous year, while peer-to-peer poker experienced a 3% decline, totaling CA$418 million.

Revenue Growth Across the Market

Ontario’s online gambling revenue for Q3 stood at CA$826 million, reflecting a 26% increase compared to the previous year and a 12% rise from Q2.

Online casino revenue reached CA$644 million, marking a 37% year-on-year growth. However, sports betting revenue dropped by 3% to CA$166 million, and poker revenue declined by 6% to CA$16 million.

The newly introduced monthly reporting system highlighted that December spending reached a record CA$7.8 billion—28% higher than the previous year and 4% above November’s total.

Online casino betting accounted for CA$6.5 billion, showing a 33% annual growth, while sports betting rose 9% to CA$1.1 billion. Poker spending, however, decreased by 8% to CA$141 million.

December’s revenue totaled CA$269 million, up 19% from the prior year but 10% below November’s record CA$291 million.

Online casino revenue hit CA$224 million, a 36% increase year-on-year, while sports betting revenue fell by 28% to CA$39 million. Poker revenue also declined by 7% to CA$5.6 million.
