Poker Joins the Elite. Officially Recognized as a Mind Sport by IMSA

The International Mind Sports Association (IMSA) has officially recognized poker as a Mind Sport, placing it alongside chess and eSports. This milestone represents a transformative moment for the global poker community and the future of the game.

On November 16, 2024, poker took a significant step forward in its evolution, earning its place among the world’s intellectual sports. This historic recognition by IMSA underscores the strategic depth, mental acuity, and decision-making skills required to excel at poker.

The journey to this achievement was driven by the efforts of the World Poker Federation (WPF) and its network of federations spanning nearly 50 countries. By showcasing poker’s intellectual rigor and its parallels to other Mind Sports, such as chess, the WPF has solidified poker’s standing as more than a game of chance.

“IMSA’s decision validates years of dedication by countless players, professionals, and organizations who view poker as an intellectual pursuit. Now begins the work of building global structures to support this recognition,” said Igor Trafane, President of WPF.

Potential Impact on Global Poker Regulation

IMSA’s endorsement of poker as a sport rooted in strategy could have wide-reaching implications, especially in regions where poker faces restrictive legislation. By reframing poker as a skill-based competition rather than a gambling activity, advocates now have a stronger case for developing legal and regulated markets for the game.

This recognition could lead to more opportunities for professional players, better protections for participants, and a reimagined framework for the industry’s growth.

The official recognition of poker as a Mind Sport opens up new horizons:

  • For Players: A clear pathway for professional careers, increased visibility, and access to international events.
  • For the Industry: A more stable and recognized position within the global sports landscape.
  • For Sponsors: Expanded opportunities to collaborate within a structured and credible environment.

Leonardo Cavarge, CEO of WPF, emphasized, “We’ve reached a milestone, but this is just the beginning. Our vision is to create a global sports infrastructure for poker that protects the game and fosters its growth worldwide.”

Celebrating a Historic Milestone

This achievement was commemorated at a special event during the BSOP Millions in São Paulo, uniting poker enthusiasts, sports personalities, and cultural icons in a celebration of poker’s new status.

The evening featured prominent figures, including former Real Madrid player Marcelo Vieira, Brazilian football captain Tamires, and renowned poker players André Akkari and Rafael Moraes. The event highlighted poker’s growing influence across diverse sectors, demonstrating its appeal beyond the tables.

A friendly poker tournament was held to mark the occasion, with PokerStars awarding entries to prestigious events in Latin America for the top players.

This landmark moment follows years of dedicated advocacy. Since being accepted as a provisional IMSA member in 2022, the WPF has worked to showcase poker’s intellectual merit, collaborating with governments and institutions to establish its credibility as a sport requiring mental acuity.

A Bright Future for Poker

The official recognition of poker as a Mind Sport represents a turning point for the game and its community. By joining the ranks of established intellectual disciplines, poker is poised to grow in new and exciting ways, offering opportunities for players, businesses, and enthusiasts alike.

This moment signifies more than just a title—it is an invitation to build a future where poker is celebrated for the skill, strategy, and determination it embodies. With this recognition, the game enters a new chapter, ready to thrive on the global stage.
