Svenska Spel Reports 94% Revenue from Low-Risk Gamblers in Q3 2024

Swedish betting company Svenska Spel announced that 94% of its SEK1.97 billion revenue for the third quarter of 2024 came from low-risk, responsible gamblers, marking a 0.7 percentage point increase from the previous quarter.

Increase in Healthy Revenue

Svenska Spel revealed that a significant portion of its revenue—94% of SEK1.97 billion (£144 million/US$177 million) for the quarter ending September 30—originated from players categorized as low-risk and gambling responsibly.

The company continues to prioritize sustainable growth by focusing on reducing revenue from higher-risk customers. Anna Johnson, Svenska Spel President and CEO, stated: “Our goal is to balance growth with responsibility, ensuring long-term sustainability in our operations.”

The calculation of low-risk revenue is based on risk models integrated into Svenska Spel’s Playscan analysis tool. This tool assesses customers’ gambling habits and assigns a risk level, categorizing revenue from low-risk customers as “healthy.”

Looking ahead, Svenska Spel plans to introduce additional measures aimed at enhancing consumer protection. These initiatives are expected to further increase the share of healthy revenue in future financial reports.

Investment in Responsible Gambling Research

Demonstrating its commitment to responsible gambling, Svenska Spel’s independent research council has allocated SEK5.9 million (£431,600) to fund seven research projects focused on gambling addiction. This investment supports long-term research efforts aimed at preventing problem gambling.

In August, Svenska Spel hosted the Nordic Network Meeting, bringing together state-owned gaming companies from across the Nordic region. The event concentrated on responsible gambling and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues, aiming to enhance sustainability efforts within the sector.

Nationwide Educational Initiatives

From September to December, the company is conducting a nationwide tour of Swedish Hockey League (SHL) clubs. The tour aims to educate players, managers, and referees on gambling problems and match-fixing, as part of Svenska Spel’s broader effort to promote integrity and responsibility in sports.

“We are developing the measurement method all the time and thanks to a good collaboration with our supplier of Poker, we have been able to calibrate the measurement of the income from that game further,” said Svenska Spel Responsible Gambling Specialist Axel Lyckberg. “It has had a marginal, but positive effect on the calculation of the proportion of healthy income. This also applies to the results for the previous quarters.”
