Sweden’s iGaming Market Sees Continued Growth in 2024

Sweden’s online gambling sector remains the dominant force in the country’s regulated gaming market, generating SEK 17.84 billion in 2024. This marks a 5.0% increase from the previous year, according to figures released by Spelinspektionen on February 20.

Online Gambling Drives Market Expansion

The latest statistics highlight the continued strength of Sweden’s commercial online gambling sector, which includes both online casinos and sports betting. Throughout the year, the market showed consistent growth, with the fourth quarter generating SEK 4.63 billion, the highest quarterly figure recorded in 2024. The sector’s sustained momentum solidifies its position as the primary driver of revenue in Sweden’s regulated gambling industry.

A Market Shaped by Digital Transformation

The rise of iGaming reflects broader industry trends, where players increasingly opt for convenient and digitally accessible betting options. While land-based and state-run gambling segments remain part of Sweden’s market landscape, they continue to represent a much smaller share of overall revenue. State lotteries and slot machines generated SEK 5.72 billion, while Sweden’s only state-run casino, Casino Cosmopol, reported SEK 160 million for the year. Charitable lotteries and bingo halls contributed SEK 3.70 billion and SEK 196 million, respectively, while land-based commercial gambling accounted for SEK 235 million.

The Future of Sweden’s iGaming Market

With online gambling making up over 64% of the country’s total gambling revenue, its dominance is unlikely to wane in the near future. The Swedish regulatory framework continues to focus on licensed operators, ensuring that market growth aligns with responsible gaming measures. As digital gambling continues to evolve, the sector is expected to remain a central pillar of Sweden’s gambling industry, shaping the future of regulated gaming in the country.
