Thailand Government Begins Online Gambling Legalisation Talks
Thailand’s government is initiating discussions on legalizing online gambling, aiming to boost the economy and combat illegal activities, according to reports from the region.
Initial Discussions Begin
Deputy Prime Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong has announced that the Thai government is commencing initial talks regarding the potential legalization of online gambling.
Alongside these discussions, an official study into online gambling is being conducted, with completion expected in the coming months. Prasert has urged government agencies to collaborate on this study and subsequent discussions.
The primary drivers behind this push for legalization are the potential economic benefits and the desire to curb illegal online gambling, which has been linked to criminal behavior. The government hopes to channel the existing market into a regulated framework.
Age Limit Discussions Pending
While discussions are underway, Prasert noted that the age limit for online gambling has not yet been determined. This crucial detail will be addressed as the process moves forward.
This news follows the release of a Casino Bill draft in August, which focused on the legalization of land-based casinos in Thailand, indicating a broader shift in the country’s gambling policy.
In contrast, data from Japan shows a significant increase in gambling addiction cases related to online casinos, with consultation requests surging 11-fold in the last five years. This highlights the potential risks associated with online gambling.
