Trends in Self-Exclusion Registrations Across Australia

BetStop, the national self-exclusion register in Australia, has seen over 40,000 individuals take steps to manage their gambling activities by opting out of licensed online and phone wagering services.

Decrease in New Registrations

By the end of March 2025, a total of 40,121 people had registered with BetStop. Of these, 27,763 exclusions are currently active. This suggests that 12,358 individuals have either completed their exclusion period or decided to end it earlier than initially planned.

The first quarter of the 2024–2025 fiscal year showed a noticeable decline in new registrations. There were 4,521 new registrants during this time—a reduction of 11.1% from the previous quarter and a significant decrease of 39.7% compared to the same quarter last year.

This trend continued into the following quarters, with 5,178 new registrations in the second quarter and 4,450 in the third.

Demographics and Exclusion Preferences

Registrations vary across Australian states and territories. New South Wales recorded the highest number with 12,531 registrants. Victoria followed with 10,800, and Queensland had 8,125. In contrast, the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory reported lower numbers at 607 and 325 registrations respectively.

A closer look at the demographics reveals that 46% of registrants are aged 30 or under, while another 32% are between the ages of 31-40. Regarding exclusion duration preferences, about 39% have chosen lifetime exclusion while another 39% opted for a period ranging from three months to two years.
