Turkish Football Faces Widening Betting Scandal

Turkey’s football authorities have issued new bans against professional players as a major betting investigation accelerates. The case now spans several leagues and involves both players and referees. It marks one of the most extensive disciplinary actions in the country’s sporting history.

Dozens of Players Disciplined Across Two Leagues

The Turkish Football Federation suspended 102 players from the Super Lig and the first division as part of the expanding inquiry. Officials barred 25 players from the top tier and 77 from the second tier. The bans range from one day to 45 days, depending on the violation.

Eren Elmali, a defender for Galatasaray and Turkey, received a 45-day ban for placing a bet five years ago. He wagered on a match unrelated to his own team, yet the federation still enforced the penalty under strict anti-gambling rules. His teammate Metehan Baltaci also faced suspension for a similar action. In a social media statement, Baltaci said it was wrong to place any wager and acknowledged the violation.

Federation Escalates Anti-Corruption Efforts

Federation president Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu continues to push a firm anti-corruption mandate. In a translated statement, he said:

“We took office 16 months ago with a promise to elevate Turkish football to the level it deserves. We will not compromise in our fight to protect Turkish football from scandal, decay, and corrupt relationships.”

Investigators have focused heavily on referee activity, uncovering extensive betting patterns across the officiating pool. Authorities reported that more than 150 referees held multiple betting accounts, with some placing thousands of wagers over several years.

These findings intensified pressure to widen the probe beyond players. As the investigation continues, further disciplinary decisions remain likely. The federation aims to restore integrity across all levels of Turkish football.
