UK Gambling Commission Introduces Clearer Rules for Deposit Limits

The UK Gambling Commission has announced new rules designed to make deposit limits more transparent and consistent for online players. The changes, which will take effect in stages between October 2025 and June 2026, aim to help consumers better manage their gambling spend and maintain greater control over their activity.

Greater Clarity for Players

From 30 June 2026, all online operators will be required to offer customers a clearly defined “deposit limit”, based solely on the total amount of money paid into an account over a specific period. To reduce confusion, only this form of limit will be allowed to use the term deposit limit.

Operators will still be able to offer other types of controls, such as loss limits or combined limits that also account for withdrawals. The updated approach is part of the Commission’s broader effort to make responsible gambling tools easier to understand and use.

New Requirements from October 2025

A major milestone in the reform will come on 31 October 2025, when several new measures take effect. From that date, all gambling operators must:

  • Prompt customers to set a financial limit before making their first deposit, and ensure these limits are easy to view and adjust.

  • Remind users every six months to review their account and transaction information.

  • Offer limit-setting tools using free-text fields at the account level to allow more personalized control.

  • Provide clearly visible links to financial limit tools on homepages and deposit pages, with minimal clicks required.

  • Implement any customer request to decrease a financial limit immediately.

Empowering Consumers

Helen Rhodes, the Commission’s Director of Major Policy Projects, said the new framework will give players stronger tools to control their gambling.

“Our work will help empower consumers to have greater awareness and control over their gambling. These further changes will also bring consistency and clarity for those consumers choosing to set deposit limits, while still supporting gambling businesses to offer customer choice for different forms of limits,” she said.

The Commission expects the updated rules to create a more consistent and user-friendly system of financial controls across the online gambling sector.
