UK Gambling Commission warns operators over late regulatory returns

The UK Gambling Commission has issued a formal warning to operators, reminding them that failure to submit regulatory returns on time may lead to financial penalties and further enforcement action. The warning follows multiple fines issued in recent months for non-compliance.

Fines already issued for missed deadlines

Since October, more than ten operators have received fines of up to £750 for failing to submit regulatory returns within the required timeframe for their licensed activities. The Commission noted that these penalties were issued despite prior engagement and formal advice notices.

John Pierce, Commission Director of Enforcement, stated:

“Despite early engagement and the issuing of advice notices, further failures to comply with the regulatory returns process were identified in these cases. Operators are expected to understand their reporting obligations and must ensure returns are submitted on time via our online portal. Repeated breaches and persistent non-compliance is likely to result in escalating enforcement action.”

New quarterly schedule now in effect

As of 1 July 2024, the reporting schedule under Licence Condition 15.3.1 was updated. All licensees are now required to submit regulatory returns on a quarterly basis, replacing the previous annual reporting system.

The next set of quarterly returns is due by 28 April 2025. Failure to do so may not only result in financial penalties but could also damage an operator’s standing with the regulator, particularly in cases where a pattern of non-compliance emerges.
