UK Gambling Reforms Set to Move Forward Under New Minister
The UK’s gambling industry is on the verge of significant reform, following clear indications from Baroness Twycross, the UK’s Minister for Gambling, that plans outlined in the Gambling White Paper will soon be implemented. Speaking at the Labour Party Conference, Twycross emphasized that the long-awaited changes will not face further delays and are expected to take shape within the coming months.
Strong Cross-Party Support for Reform
Baroness Twycross underlined the broad cross-party backing for the Gambling White Paper, despite the initial delay caused by a snap general election.
She reaffirmed Labour’s commitment to stronger gambling regulations, stating:
“In opposition we (the Labour Party) were broadly supportive of the Gambling White Paper… most people who gamble do so safely, but we absolutely believe that we need to strengthen protections to protect those that are at risk of gambling addiction and harmful gambling.”
Her comments signal a clear intent to prioritize these reforms, addressing frustrations from stakeholders who have been waiting for progress.
Twycross assured that the discussions would not drag on indefinitely, making it her priority as the new Minister to push forward the changes.
Industry Response to the Minister’s Timeline
The industry’s reaction to Twycross’ remarks has been largely positive. George McGregor, Executive Director for Government Relations at Bacta, welcomed the Minister’s clear timeline for reform. He noted,
“Her reference points in terms of the timetable for implementation were weeks and months… we have a Minister who is both pragmatic and proportionate.”
McGregor also expressed optimism about an upcoming meeting with Baroness Twycross, scheduled for October, where further discussions will focus on Bacta’s role in promoting safer gambling and supporting the government’s broader economic goals.
