Thousands of Australians Turn to BetStop for Self-Exclusion from Gambling

Since its inception in August 2023, BetStop, Australia’s National Self-Exclusion Register, has seen over 28,000 individuals register to exclude themselves from all licensed online and phone wagering services.

Wide Range of Self-Exclusion Options

BetStop offers a flexible range of self-exclusion periods, allowing individuals to opt out of gambling services for as little as three months or as long as a lifetime.

This flexibility is crucial for accommodating the varied needs of those seeking to regain control over their gambling behavior.

The ACMA reported that a significant portion of registrants, nearly 50%, are aged 30 and under, with around 80% of all registrants being under 40.

Notably, approximately 40% of users chose permanent self-exclusion, demonstrating a strong commitment to long-term change.

Younger Australians Leading the Charge

The proactive stance of younger Australians has been a significant aspect of BetStop’s early success.

Fewer than 20% of registrants opted for the minimum three-month exclusion, with over 14% choosing to extend or reactivate their self-exclusion period.

This trend highlights a growing awareness among younger demographics about the potential harms of online gambling and a willingness to take steps to mitigate these risks early in their lives.

Support Systems Integral to Success

ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin praised the impact of BetStop in its first year, stating, “Online gambling can cause a great deal of harm to individuals, their families, and friends, so it’s encouraging that so many people have decided to take the step and register to self-exclude.”

O’Loughlin also emphasized the importance of support systems for those who decide to self-exclude, noting that many registrants have nominated someone to assist them through the process.

This support can be critical in helping individuals make and maintain their decision to stop gambling online.

Easy and Accessible Registration Process

Registering with BetStop is straightforward, with the process taking less than five minutes via the official website, www.betstop.gov.au.

The ACMA continues to advocate for the use of BetStop as an effective tool in reducing online gambling harm, encouraging anyone who feels the need to self-exclude to take advantage of the service.
