Swedish Gambling Authority Intensifies Fight Against Illegal Online Gambling

Spelinspektionen, Sweden’s gambling regulator, is implementing new measures to more effectively combat illegal online gambling activities within the country.

Developing a Comprehensive Overview

To strengthen its efforts against unlicensed gambling operators, Spelinspektionen is creating a detailed “situation description.” This comprehensive overview aims to provide a clearer picture of the illegal online gambling landscape in Sweden, enhancing consumer protection, public health, and tax revenue through a more robust licensing system.

The situation description will help the authority identify major players and techniques used to circumvent Swedish gambling laws. By understanding these methods, Spelinspektionen can develop targeted strategies to disrupt and prevent unauthorized gambling activities.

According to Camilla Rosenberg, Director General of Spelinspektionen, this initiative will not only benefit the regulator but also assist other authorities and stakeholders in the gambling market. Enhanced collaboration is expected to bolster the overall effectiveness of efforts to counter illegal gambling.

Incorporating International Insights

The new approach includes international comparisons to learn from other countries’ experiences in tackling illegal online gambling. These insights will inform suggestions and strategies for strengthening future actions against unlicensed operators, including potential legislative changes.

Recently, the Swedish government granted Spelinspektionen additional authority to intervene directly in cases of excessive online gambling.
