Alleged Bot Usage in Papaya Gaming’s Skill-Based Games Spurs Legal Action

A recent class-action lawsuit has been filed against the Israel-based mobile game developer Papaya Gaming, alleging the company uses computer bots to deceive users in its skill-based gaming apps.

This lawsuit, filed in the Southern District of New York, raises serious questions about the fairness and integrity of online competitive gaming platforms.

Background on the Lawsuit

The lawsuit was initiated by plaintiff Brenna Kelly-Starkebaum, who claims that Papaya’s popular games like Solitaire Cash and Bubble Cash involve competitions not against other human players, as advertised, but against computer-generated bots controlled by Papaya. According to the filing, these bots manipulate game outcomes, allowing the company to pocket the prize money unfairly.

Previous Legal Precedents

This legal challenge comes on the heels of a similar case involving AviaGames and Skillz Gaming. In February, a jury awarded Skillz Gaming $42.9 million, concluding that AviaGames had infringed on Skillz’s patented platform and used automated bots in a manner that deceived players. Skillz’s legal team has since turned their attention to Papaya, suggesting a pattern of behavior in the industry that could have wide-reaching implications.

Allegations of Deceptive Practices

The complaint against Papaya articulates that while the company promotes its games as fair competitions based on skill, the reality is quite different. “Papaya controls the outcome of the games and uses its own bots to play against players to win, after which Papaya keeps the prize money for itself,” the lawsuit alleges. This has reportedly misled players who believe they are engaging in fair and equitable gameplay.

Papaya’s Defense

In response to the lawsuit, Papaya Gaming has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. A statement released to Casino.org outlined their commitment to fair play, stating, “We are absolutely committed to fair and enjoyable skills-based mobile gaming that rewards the abilities of our players. This legal action has no merit, and we will vigorously defend against any and all baseless claims.”

Industry Reaction and Implications

The case against Papaya Gaming not only challenges the company’s operational practices but also casts a shadow over the broader mobile gaming industry, particularly the segments that involve monetary transactions and claims of skill-based outcomes. The use of bots, if proven, could significantly undermine trust in these platforms.
