The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has announced the appointment of Dr. Karin Schnarr as the upcoming Chief Executive Officer and Registrar.

This decision comes as part of AGCO’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its leadership and regulatory capacities within the gaming sector. Dr. Schnarr, known for her multifaceted background, is set to assume her new role on September 18, 2023.

Dr. Schnarr’s extensive career spans academic, public, and private sectors. Presently holding the position of Associate Professor of Strategic Management at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Lazaridis School of Business & Economics, she also brings valuable experience as Director of MBA and BBA Programs. Dr. Schnarr’s academic journey is supported by a PhD in Strategic Management (Corporate Governance) and an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario.

Government and Policy Experience

Dr. Schnarr has actively engaged in the Government of Ontario, undertaking roles as Chief of Staff to ministers across diverse portfolios. In this capacity, she has contributed to the development of significant public policies, legislative measures, and regulatory frameworks. Her involvement also extended to chairing the Ontario Government’s Task Force on Women and the Economy, demonstrating her influence in shaping policy priorities.

With a substantial background in governance, Dr. Schnarr has held leadership positions on several Boards of Directors. Notably, she served as Chair of the Board of the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario and as Vice-Chair of the Waterloo Regional Police Services Board. Her commitment to community welfare is evident through her volunteer work with ALS Canada’s National Advocacy Committee and the Kids Health Foundation.

Expertise in iGaming

Dr. Schnarr’s previous engagement as a member of the iGaming Ontario Board of Directors signifies her familiarity with the gaming industry’s dynamics and complexities. This experience positions her well to navigate the unique challenges and opportunities within Ontario’s evolving gaming landscape.

Dr. Schnarr’s appointment follows the decision of Tom Mungham, AGCO’s outgoing CEO and Registrar, to retire from the agency. AGCO expresses its gratitude for Mungham’s contributions during his tenure. As Dr. Schnarr prepares to assume her role, the organization is optimistic about the strategic direction she will provide to AGCO and Ontario’s gaming oversight.
