Dutch Politicians Call for Sale of Holland Casino Amid Financial Struggles

The Netherlands’ Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) has called for the government to sell its gambling monopoly, Holland Casino, citing the company’s inability to compete with other betting operators in the increasingly competitive market.

Holland Casino’s Financial Woes

Holland Casino operates fourteen land-based venues across the country, along with an online gaming platform. However, the company has struggled to keep up with rising competition from other online gaming operators, compounded by tighter tax regulations and increased enforcement.

In the first half of 2024, the company reported a loss of €3.5 million, a stark contrast to the €17 million profit it recorded during the same period last year.

CDA’s Push for Privatization

In response to these financial challenges, the CDA is advocating for the sale of Holland Casino. The party argues that privatization could help the company become more competitive.

However, it should be noted that the CDA is also pushing for a complete ban on online betting in the country, which may complicate its position.

While the CDA is vocal in its call for privatization, the likelihood of legislative action remains unclear. The party currently holds limited influence in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, making it uncertain whether any bills aimed at selling Holland Casino will be introduced in the near future.
