Entain Nears Conclusion of Legal Proceedings with Deferred Prosecution Agreement

Entain plc, a prominent player in the global sports betting and gaming industry, has made significant progress in resolving legal issues stemming from its past operations.

Entain Nears Conclusion of Legal Proceedings with Deferred Prosecution Agreement

The company has tentatively agreed to a Deferred Prosecution Agreement (DPA) with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), a crucial step towards finalizing a legal dispute that has been part of its legacy since 2017.

Details of the Deferred Prosecution Agreement

This agreement, which received preliminary judicial approval from Dame Victoria Sharp, is set to be finalized on 5 December 2023.

The DPA addresses historical concerns related to Entain’s Turkish-facing business, which was sold off in 2017. The main focus of this agreement is the alleged failure to implement adequate anti-bribery procedures as required by Section 7 of the Bribery Act 2010.

Under the terms of the DPA, Entain has committed to a financial penalty and restitution totaling £585 million, along with additional charitable donations and covering legal costs.

Entain’s Response and Future Commitments

Barry Gibson, the Chairman of Entain, emphasized the transformation the company has undergone since the events in question.

Gibson stated “This legacy matter concerns a business which was sold by a former management team six years ago. The Group has changed immeasurably since these events took place, and the DPA process has provided a reminder of the stark differences between the GVC of yesterday and the Entain of today. We are committed to continuing our journey towards operating only in regulated markets, and are now widely recognised as a best-in-class, responsible operator with the highest levels of corporate governance across all aspects of our business.”
