Galatasaray Puts Sponsorship Agreement on Hold Over Betting Controversy

On September 17, 2024, Galatasaray, one of Turkey’s most prominent soccer clubs, announced it was suspending its $14 million sponsorship agreement with Serwin Global Solutions, the company behind Meritking.news. The decision followed concerns about the authenticity of documents and statements tied to the deal, as well as potential links to unlawful betting activities.

Decision to Suspend the Agreement

Galatasaray’s sponsorship agreement, valued at $14 million, was set to run for two years, promoting the Meritking.news platform during league and cup matches. The team had already worn jerseys displaying the Meritking.news logo during a match against Çaykur Rizespor in the Trendyol Süper Lig. However, shortly after the game, the club decided to pause the partnership.

According to the official statement released by Galatasaray, the suspension was due to “unanswered questions about the information, documents, and other claims related to the sponsorship deal.” The club emphasized that maintaining integrity and alignment with its values was paramount when reviewing any partnership.

Controversy Over Alleged Links to Unlawful Betting

The decision has stirred controversy, largely due to allegations that Meritking.news may be connected to illegal betting operations. These claims not only cast a shadow over the deal but also prompted rival club Fenerbahçe to file formal complaints with sports authorities. The timing of these allegations, just before a crucial match between the two clubs, added tension to their longstanding rivalry.

Despite this, Galatasaray leadership insisted the club’s legal team had thoroughly vetted the deal and noted that the contract included provisions for termination if any illegal activities were found. However, the club opted for caution amidst the mounting scrutiny.

Vice President Niyazi Yelkencioğlu initially defended the sponsorship, stating that “the agreement was with a news platform, and lawyers had ensured its legality.” However, as public debate intensified, Galatasaray decided to temporarily suspend the deal, prioritizing the club’s reputation and adherence to ethical standards. The club assured fans that it would continue to place integrity and transparency at the forefront of its decisions regarding future partnerships.

Galatasaray is one of the most successful teams in Turkish soccer, with 24 Süper Lig titles, 18 Turkish Cups, and 17 Turkish Super Cups.
