Kangwon Land Casino Sets the Stage for a $1.9 Billion Expansion to Boost Global Competitiveness

Kangwon Land Inc., the operator behind South Korea’s exclusive casino resort accessible to locals, has unveiled an ambitious $1.9 billion expansion and renovation project dubbed “K-HIT Project 1.0.” This initiative aims to transform the resort into a world-class destination by tripling its casino space by 2032 and enhancing its appeal to both local and international visitors.

Expanding the Gaming Experience

The centerpiece of this expansion is the dramatic increase in the gaming space, which will grow to an impressive 532,814 square feet. This expansion is designed to alleviate the current shortage of player seats and significantly enhance the gaming experience. A substantial portion of the budget, KRW1.8 trillion, is earmarked specifically for the gaming areas, indicating a strong focus on delivering a top-tier casino experience.

Interim CEO Choi Cheol-Gyu highlighted the strategic importance of this expansion in light of the anticipated competition from the upcoming MGM Osaka integrated resort in Japan. With Osaka’s IR only a 90-minute flight from South Korea, Kangwon Land is proactive in fortifying its position as a premier gaming destination in the region.

Luxurious Additions and Strategic Renovations

The project’s luxurious new additions include VIP rooms accessible by helicopter, aiming to attract high rollers from Korea and beyond. The planned sky bridge linking the casino to the High1 Ski and Golf Resort is another strategic move to integrate gaming with leisure and sports, broadening the resort’s appeal.

The business strategy also includes renovating existing VIP casino establishments by 2027 and raising the maximum wagering limit, further aligning Kangwon Land with global casino standards.

Enhancing Hospitality and Non-Gaming Offerings

Beyond gaming, the expansion includes a KRW270 billion hotel extension, additional establishments worth KRW280 billion, and a lavish villa complete with a swimming pool for KRW30 billion. These enhancements are part of Kangwon Land’s vision to diversify its offerings and increase the non-casino sales from the current 13% to 30% of total sales.

The resort aims to attract a significantly larger number of international visitors, with a goal to multiply the current figures by ten. The target is to boost the annual visitor count from 6.8 million to 12 million, turning Kangwon Land into a major tourist hub in Asia.

Acknowledging the extensive timeline for the full expansion, Kangwon Land plans to establish an interim casino within the next 2-3 years to cater to immediate demand. This interim facility will bridge the gap during the construction phase, ensuring continuity in operations and service to patrons.
