Netherlands Enforces New Deposit Limits for Online Gambling

As of October 1, the Netherlands has implemented new deposit limits for online gambling. Licensed operators are required to block net deposits exceeding €700 per month, while players aged 18 to 25 are subject to a lower limit of €300.

Player Limits

Players can request an increase in their deposit limits by providing proof of income, with the possibility of raising the limit to a maximum of 30% of their net earnings. Additionally, players are required to set personal deposit limits upon registering with an operator. Financial checks are mandatory for monthly deposits exceeding €350 (€150 for players under 25).

Players may lower their deposit limits at any time, but increasing them will involve a seven-day waiting period. Operators must notify players when they reach 50% and 100% of their deposit limits, and must log them out once the full limit is reached.

Responsible Gambling Measures

Operators are now required to display responsible gambling messages every 30 minutes. For players who set their deposit limits at the maximum allowed, operators must conduct a direct interaction with trained customer service staff. This interaction must be with a human representative rather than a chatbot, and it should inform players about the national self-exclusion registry, CRUKS.

Responsibility for Dutch gambling policy has been transferred to the new Secretary of State for Legal Protection, a position within the Ministry of Justice. This role replaces the one previously held by Franc Weerwind, the former Minister for Legal Protection.

The shift follows a recent political agreement after Geert Wilders’ Party for Freedom (PVV) reached a deal to form a conservative coalition with the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), the New Social Contract Party (NSC), and the Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB). According to reports from the state broadcaster, the NSC has been assigned the role of Secretary of State for Legal Protection.
