New Betting Limits on Online Slots in the UK Come into Effect

From 1 September, new restrictions have been introduced on the maximum amount that players in the UK can wager per spin on online slot games. The changes are designed to protect younger players and reduce gambling-related harm.

Stricter Limits for Younger Gamblers

Under the new regulations, players under the age of 25 can now only bet a maximum of £2 per spin on online slot games. Those who are 25 and older face a higher limit of £5 per spin. Previously, there was no specific limit on online slot wagers, though fixed-odds betting machines in locations like pubs had already seen a £2 limit in place for five years.

In addition to bet limits, the UK Gambling Commission is introducing a pilot programme to assess the financial risks of players. Initially, this system will focus on gamblers who deposit more than £500 per month, with credit agencies and gaming operators assessing whether these individuals may be at risk of gambling-related harm. The threshold for these financial checks will lower to £150 per month by the end of February 2025.

Impact on Operators

The UK’s online slots industry generated £3.2 billion in revenue in 2023, making it a substantial part of the gambling market. While some operators had already begun to voluntarily limit bet amounts before the new rules were enforced, the industry is likely to face financial challenges as the new restrictions take full effect.

The tighter regulations aim to strike a balance between protecting consumers and maintaining a sustainable gambling sector, but their long-term impact on the market remains to be seen.
