Online Casino Growth Offsets Decline in Land-Based Gambling in Denmark

The Danish Gambling Authority, Spillmyndigheden, has reported a 2.5% year-on-year increase in gambling expenditure in Denmark for July 2024, driven primarily by growth in online casino and betting activities, despite a continued decline in land-based gambling.

Increased Online Gambling Consumption

In July 2024, Danish consumers spent a total of DKK 554 million on various forms of gambling, including online casinos, sports betting, slot machines, and land-based casinos. The growth was mainly fueled by a 7.8% rise in online casino spending, which now represents 51.25% of the total gross gaming revenue (GGR).

Sports betting also saw a modest increase of 0.7%, bringing in DKK 149 million and accounting for 27% of the total GGR.

Decline in Land-Based Gambling

While online gambling continues to grow, the traditional land-based segment is experiencing a downturn. Land-based casino revenues dropped by 9.4% year-on-year to DKK 29 million, and slot machine revenues also fell by 5.2%, totaling DKK 92 million. These declines highlight the ongoing shift in consumer preference from physical gambling venues to online platforms.

Additionally, Spillmyndigheden reported that 51,226 players had enrolled in Denmark’s national self-exclusion scheme, ROFUS, by July 2024. This figure reflects the ongoing efforts to address problem gambling within the country.
