Sandro Tonali Returns to Newcastle After Serving Betting Suspension

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has completed his 10-month suspension for placing bets on Serie A matches, including those involving his former teams.

End of Suspension and Return to Action

Tonali’s suspension, imposed by the Italian football authorities and extended globally with FIFA’s approval, ended last Wednesday.

This allowed the midfielder to rejoin his Newcastle teammates for a Carabao Cup tie against Nottingham Forest, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

While Tonali did not score during the match, he played a key role in the team’s 4-3 victory on penalties.

Impact of £55 Million Signing

Tonali’s return comes after his high-profile transfer from AC Milan in July 2023 for £55 million ($72 million), marking the second-highest transfer fee in Newcastle’s history.

In his first game back, Tonali nearly found the net, but his shot, set up by Alexander Isak, was blocked by Nottingham Forest’s goalkeeper, Carlos Miguel.

Turning Adversity into Positive Change

During his ban, Tonali shifted focus towards helping others who faced similar struggles with problem gambling.

In a candid interview, Tonali reflected on the emotional challenges of the suspension, calling the first three months “very, very, very difficult.”

However, he used this time to connect with individuals in Newcastle dealing with hidden gambling problems, offering support and sharing his own experience.

His efforts to raise awareness and help others were well-received, and he found satisfaction in inspiring those seeking help.

Alongside his community work, Tonali was also required to complete an educational program and made multiple visits to Italy to speak with young players about the dangers of gambling.

Support from Club and Fans

Although unable to play, Tonali remained active in training throughout his suspension and continued to receive support from both fans and club members.

Newcastle’s manager, Eddie Howe, described the midfielder as “fit” and emotionally prepared for his return, suggesting the comeback would provide Tonali with an “incredible release” after a challenging period.
