Spanish iGaming Industry Report for Q2 2023: Steady Growth Across Segments

In the second quarter of 2023, the Spanish Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) reached €312.61 million, marking a 2.52% increase compared to the previous quarter and an impressive 55.06% increase compared to the same quarter in 2022.

Examining other key metrics, player deposits and withdrawals increased by 19.62% and 2.97%, respectively, compared to the previous year. However, compared to the previous quarter, deposits decreased by -2.01%, and withdrawals declined by -2.33%.

Marketing expenses saw a 1.90% increase compared to the previous quarter, while new account registrations decreased by -7.71%.

Analyzing the GGR by gaming segments reveals the following distribution:

  • Betting: €133.31 million (42.64%)
  • Bingo: €3.54 million (1.13%)
  • Casino: €149.86 million (47.94%)
  • Contests: €0.14 million (0.05%)
  • Poker: €25.76 million (8.24%)

Betting Segment

Betting recorded a growth rate of 2.07% compared to the previous quarter and an astounding 118.90% growth compared to the same quarter the previous year.

Conventional sports betting increased by 1.81%, live sports betting surged by 3.47%, horse race betting grew by 22.67%, while other counterpart betting decreased by -15.08%.

Bingo Segment

Bingo experienced growth of 5.54% compared to the previous quarter and 5.51% compared to the same quarter in 2022.

Casino Segment

The casino segment reported a 4.53% increase compared to the first quarter of 2023 and a significant annual growth rate of 27.92%. This annual growth is attributed to a 29.91% increase in slot machines and a 31.77% increase in live roulette.

Compared to the previous quarter, slot machines increased by 8.93%, conventional roulette by 0.20%, while live roulette decreased by -0.84%.

Contests Segment

The contests segment saw a decrease of -41.50% in this quarter but a remarkable 1464.85% annual growth rate. This segment displayed irregular behavior with annual growth rates of 733.02% in 2020, -87.09% in 2021, and -98.19% in 2022.

Poker Segment

In the second quarter of 2023, the poker segment experienced a -5.84% decrease compared to the previous quarter but a substantial 27.57% increase compared to the same quarter the previous year.

Tournament poker decreased by -2.77% compared to the previous quarter, and cash poker decreased by -13.58%. However, the annual growth rates are positive at 38.12% and 4.85%, respectively.

Marketing

In terms of marketing expenditure for the quarter, it amounted to €96.64 million, broken down into affiliate expenses (€12.29 million), sponsorship (€1.22 million), promotions (€48.96 million), and advertising (€34.17 million). Compared to the previous quarter, marketing expenses increased by 1.90%, and the annual variation was 2.97%.

Advertising showed positive rates compared to both the previous quarter (9.73%) and the previous year (7.65%). Affiliate expenses increased by 0.04% compared to the previous quarter and a significant 56.21% annually. Sponsorship expenses decreased by -0.12% compared to the previous quarter but increased by 225.15% annually.

Promotions decreased by -2.45% compared to the previous quarter and -1.71% compared to the previous year. In this quarter, promotions were further categorized into prize-released bonuses (€13.50 million) and non-prize-related promotions (€35.46 million).

The average monthly active player accounts stood at 1,134,993, representing a -2.04% decrease compared to the previous quarter and a positive annual variation of 11.43%. The average monthly new player accounts amounted to 102,804, with a quarterly decline of -7.71% and an annual decline of -2.96%.
