Spain sees impressive year-on-year growth in GGR

The Spanish iGaming industry witnessed a slight decline in its Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) for the quarter, reaching €304.92 million, marking a 2.76% decrease compared to the previous quarter. However, compared to the same quarter of the previous year, the industry experienced significant growth, with a remarkable 50.96% increase in GGR.

Key figures

Regarding other key figures, player deposits and withdrawals have seen their rates of variation increase by 22.74% and 15.68% respectively compared to the previous year. Compared to the previous quarter, deposits have decreased by 0.31% while withdrawals have increased by 0.78%. Marketing expenses have experienced a decline of 13.08% compared to the previous quarter, and new accounts have decreased by 15.78%.

The €304.92 million in GGR is distributed as follows: €130.60 million in Sports Betting (42.83%); €3.35 million in Bingo (1.10%); €143.36 million in Casino (47.02%); €0.25 million in Contests (0.08%); and €27.36 million in Poker (8.97%).

The sports betting segment has experienced a 7.65% decrease compared to the previous quarter and a 100.10% increase compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Conventional sports bets decreased by 11.21% in live betting and 6.11% in live betting compared to the previous quarter. Horse racing bets decreased by 5.92% in counterpart bets, while other counterpart bets increased by 37.76%.

Bingo has experienced a 7.40% decrease compared to the previous quarter and a 6.62% decrease compared to the same quarter of 2022.

Casino segment and marketing expenses

In the casino segment, there has been a 0.64% growth compared to the fourth quarter of 2022 and a positive annual variation rate of 29.19%. This annual growth is seen in slot machines with a 31.29% increase and live roulette with a 32.19% increase. Compared to the previous quarter, slot machines increased by 1.23%, live roulette increased by 0.33%, and conventional roulette decreased by 3.81%.

Poker has seen a 5.01% increase in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the previous quarter and a 24.92% increase compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Compared to the previous quarter, tournament poker increased by 8.42%, while cash poker decreased by -2.72%. The annual variation rates are positive at 32.06% and 9.93% respectively.

Marketing expenses for the quarter amounted to €93.30 million, broken down into affiliate expenses of €11.86 million, sponsorship expenses of €1.22 million, promotion expenses of €50.19 million, and advertising expenses of €30.03 million. Compared to the previous quarter, these expenses decreased by 13.08% and had a 0.81% annual variation. Advertising showed negative rates compared to the previous quarter and year
