Commitment to Player Protection

Mathias Dahms, President of the DSWV, emphasized the importance of DAZN Bet’s membership, noting that it strengthens the association’s efforts in maintaining high standards of player protection. He welcomed DAZN Bet, highlighting its role in the evolving digital sports betting market in Germany.

DAZN Bet’s Vision

Daniel Berthold, Managing Director of DAZN Bet for Germany, Austria, the UK, and new markets, expressed enthusiasm about the membership: “We are delighted to be a member of the German Sports Betting Association. This partnership underlines our commitment to a safe, fair and regulated sports betting market in Germany.

“At DAZN Bet, we are committed to providing sports fans with a unique and comprehensive experience in a responsibly designed environment. Together with the DSWV, we will continue to promote high standards of player protection and drive innovation to ensure the satisfaction and safety of our users,” added.

The Challenge of Unlicensed Gambling

Despite the positive developments, the DSWV continues to express concerns over unlicensed gambling activities in Germany. According to the German gambling regulator, Gemeinsamen Glücksspielbehörde der Länder (GGL), illegal gambling comprised up to 4 per cent of the gross gambling revenue (GGR) in 2023, with the regulated market generating €13.7 billion in GGR—a 2 per cent increase from the previous year.

DSWV’s Call for Market Review

Contrary to the GGL’s report, the DSWV estimates that unlicensed gambling might represent as much as 50 per cent of the market. This would position Germany with the highest share of unregulated sports betting in Europe.

The DSWV is urging the federal government to review and enhance the legal market’s offerings to better compete with illegal operators. In response, the GGL has scheduled a comprehensive market evaluation to be completed by 2026, focusing primarily on the impact of advertising.

This partnership between DAZN Bet and the DSWV marks a significant step towards enhancing the integrity and safety of the sports betting market in Germany. However, addressing the substantial unlicensed market remains a critical challenge for regulators and industry stakeholders alike.
