Greek ban puts streaming platform Kick’s ambitions on hold as gambling content sparks controversy

A streaming platform Kick.com had set its sights on competing with Twitch, but has encountered a setback due to a recent ban in Greece.

Kick.com blocked in Greece

There has been controversy surrounding Twitch, which is owned by Amazon, as several of its top streamers voiced concerns about the promotion of gambling-related content. Although Twitch has promised to make changes, doubts remain as to whether their new policies will bring about any substantial improvements.

Meanwhile, Kick.com has gained support from Stake.com and its founders, Ed Craven and Bijan Tehrani. They offer content creators more flexibility and financial advantages, positioning Kick.com as a strong rival to Twitch.

Nevertheless, recent developments may jeopardize its rapid ascent.

Although Stake.com facilitates live gambling and owns and operates the website, Kick.com doesn’t position itself as a gambling platform.

According to the latest update on the Hellenic Gaming Commission’s gaming blacklist, Kick.com has been excluded and its “Slots Gang” section has been under scrutiny. The entire website seems to be inaccessible as of June 20.

Kick releases the statement

In response to inquiries, Kick.com stated, “Kick is the most exciting and growing livestreaming platform, providing a wide range of content to a wide range of users. We are experiencing a temporary problem with access to the platform in Greece, and we are working with Greek ISPs to resolve the issue. An individual channel appears to have been blocked by a specific ISP, resulting in the whole domain mistakenly being blocked.”

The increased focus on streaming platforms in countries like France and Brazil, as well as certain states in the US, may lead to further changes and increased regulations for streamers and their content.

Stake.com, known for its controversial promotions on Twitch, including featuring Canadian music artist Drake playing live online roulette, has been at the centre of several controversies. Similarly, streamer xQc, involved in gambling-related controversies, took a break from Twitch but later returned, acknowledging his gambling problem and continuing to spend significant sums.

Kick.com has now secured xQc as one of its primary attractions, offering him a groundbreaking $70-million contract and $30 million in incentives.
