New Zealand Opens Public Consultation on Gambling Harm Prevention Strategy

The New Zealand government has launched a public consultation to gather opinions on its upcoming three-year strategy aimed at preventing and minimizing gambling harm.

Public Engagement on Gambling Harm

As part of its ongoing efforts to combat gambling-related issues, the New Zealand government is inviting citizens to participate in a consultation on the next three-year strategy for gambling harm prevention and minimization.

Matt Doocey, the Minister for Mental Health, emphasized the importance of public input, particularly from those directly affected by gambling harm, to ensure that the strategy addresses the real needs of the community.

Government Commitment During Gambling Harm Awareness Week

The consultation comes at a time when New Zealand is observing Gambling Harm Awareness Week, highlighting the significance of addressing gambling issues.

In his statement, Doocey acknowledged that while many New Zealanders gamble without problems, the potential for significant harm exists, making it crucial to implement initiatives that prevent and minimize these risks.

Doocey encouraged the public to submit their feedback by the October 6, 2024 deadline, stressing that community insights are vital in shaping effective solutions: “The ideas we need to solve the issues we face are already in the community, so please make your voice heard.”

Focus on Lived Experience and Community Perspectives

The government is particularly interested in hearing from individuals who have firsthand experience with gambling harm.

Doocey noted that their perspectives are essential for understanding what prevention and minimization strategies work best at the community level.

This approach aligns with the government’s broader mental health and addiction priorities, which are central to the draft strategy.

Regulatory Changes on the Horizon

This consultation follows an earlier announcement in July by Minister of Internal Affairs, Brooke van Velden, regarding the regulation of online casinos in New Zealand.

The government plans to introduce a new regulatory system by early 2026 to ensure that online casino operators adhere to consumer protection standards, minimize harm, and contribute taxes.

Comprehensive Support and Prevention Strategy

Doocey highlighted the government’s commitment to a comprehensive gambling harm support system, which is reflected in the draft strategy.

Key priorities include increasing access to support services, expanding the gambling harm workforce, and enhancing early intervention and prevention efforts.

Additionally, there is a wide-ranging program underway across various government departments to address gambling harm, including research into the evolving gambling landscape and regulatory measures for online gambling.
