Regulatory Crackdown on Unlicensed Gambling Sites in Ukraine Leads to Positive Results

In a significant development, the Ukrainian regulator Krail has reported substantial success in its efforts to curb unlicensed online gambling operators in the country. According to Krail’s announcement, a staggering 72.3% of unlicensed websites voluntarily withdrew their operations in Ukraine after the regulatory body intervened. This accomplishment was achieved during the time frame spanning from January 25, 2022, to August 8 of this year.

Ukraine against illegal gambling

Unlicensed gambling operators in Ukraine have been facing the consequences of regulatory actions. When contacted by Krail over their unlicensed activities, these operators are required to cease operations within three working days. The regulator’s proactive approach in reaching out to these operators has yielded encouraging results.

The actual number of websites contacted by Krail during this period, as well as the identities of the operators, have not been disclosed by the regulatory authority. This step underscores Krail’s commitment to addressing the issue of unlicensed gambling on multiple fronts.

The regulatory efforts align with a broader crackdown on illegal gambling activities within Ukraine, spearheaded by lawmakers, Krail, and other relevant authorities. Over the recent weekend, Ukraine’s Bureau of Economic Security took action by shutting down four underground gambling establishments located in Kyiv. These establishments were situated across various districts of the city, namely Shevchenkivskyi, Solomyanskyi, and Svyatoshynskyi.

In a separate operation conducted in June, law enforcement officials uncovered an underground casino and seven additional gambling houses. The operation resulted in the seizure of UAH100,000 as part of the ongoing efforts to tackle illegal gambling activities.

Stricter measures

To address the persistent issue of unlicensed gambling, Ukraine has taken steps to introduce stricter measures. In the past month, a new law was implemented, outlining procedures for organizations vulnerable to anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing risks. As a result, operators within the country now face heightened inspections to ensure compliance with these regulations.

Krail’s proposals for reform have also played a pivotal role in shaping the government’s 2023 action plan. These proposals encompass various aspects, including the reformation of laws pertaining to the suspension and cancellation of gambling operators’ licenses.
