Vermont legalizes online sports betting

Governor Phil Scott of Vermont has officially signed a bill into law, making online sports betting legal in the state. With this move, Vermont joins the ranks of nearly three dozen other states where sports betting has been legalized.

Expressing his satisfaction with the legislative decision, Governor Scott highlighted that he had initially proposed the legalization of sports betting in Vermont several years ago: “I first proposed Vermont legalize sports betting several years ago and I’m happy the Legislature has come to an agreement, as well,” Scott said in a statement.

“We know many Vermonters already participate in the marketplace and bringing it above board provides important resources and consumer protections.”

According to the newly enacted law, the Vermont Department of Liquor and Lottery will oversee sports wagering operations through contracts with two to six licensed sports betting operators. As part of their responsibilities, the department, in collaboration with the Department of Mental Health, will submit an annual report to the Legislature, assessing the impact of sports betting on problem gambling within the state.

Furthermore, the operators chosen to provide sports betting services will be obligated to submit a responsible gaming plan to the state on a yearly basis. This plan must include provisions for the display of materials related to problem gambling, the availability of resources for bettors seeking assistance with gambling-related concerns, the establishment of house-imposed player limits, and the implementation of self-exclusion programs.

By implementing these measures, Vermont aims to ensure that sports betting is conducted in a responsible manner, with adequate support systems in place for individuals who may be at risk of developing gambling problems.
