Victoria Implements New Standards for Fairer Wagering Statements

The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) is setting new standards for how wagering account activity is reported to consumers in Victoria.

Australia Victoria

Following an in-depth analysis of current practices, which unveiled significant inconsistencies across providers, the VGCCC is introducing measures to ensure that wagering account holders are provided with a clearer and more accurate depiction of their gambling activities.

Enhancing Clarity and Fairness

Under the new regulations, player activity statements will now more accurately reflect true spending and losses, with an emphasis on excluding free and bonus bets from net loss calculations. This adjustment aims to give account holders a more transparent view of their financial engagements in wagering activities. Additionally, the computation of net wins will be refined to deduct the stakes from payout amounts, providing a truer representation of winnings.

The language used in these statements will also see a change, with a mandate on the use of plain English and a reduction in technical jargon. This initiative is designed to make the information more accessible and understandable to all users, irrespective of their familiarity with gambling terminologies. Furthermore, the color coding of financial figures will be limited to black and red, simplifying the visual representation of gains and losses.

Adherence to Consumer Protection and Harm Minimisation

This overhaul in the reporting standards is not only in line with the National Consumer Protection Framework but also adheres to the Victorian Harm Minimisation Ministerial Directions. With the implementation deadline set for 1 April 2024, wagering service providers operating in Victoria are expected to fully comply with these standards. Non-compliance carries a significant penalty, emphasizing the seriousness with which the VGCCC views these reforms.

Annette Kimmitt AM, CEO of VGCCC, underscored the importance of these changes, stating, “The days of inconsistent player activity statements are over. Wagering account holders will be better informed about their spending – and therefore better equipped to make informed decisions about their gambling – thanks to the clarity and fairness these changes bring.”

Our Comment on the Article

The VGCCC’s initiative to standardize wagering activity statements in Victoria represents a significant stride towards fostering a more responsible and transparent gambling environment. By providing wagering account holders with clearer, more accurate information, the VGCCC not only enhances consumer protection but also empowers individuals to make more informed decisions regarding their gambling habits. This move, reflective of a broader trend towards increased accountability and consumer protection in the iGaming industry, sets a commendable precedent for other jurisdictions to follow. As the implementation date approaches, it will be interesting to see the impact of these changes on the wagering landscape in Victoria and potentially beyond.
